Low MOQ Cosmetic Packaging: Launching Without a Thousand Bottles
Cosmetic packaging supplier, Strand, Western Cape. We quote and ship these containers from 10 units.
The first quote most new brands get asks for a thousand units per item, and plenty of suppliers will not answer an email below five thousand. For a brand with no sales history that is a large bet placed on a guess about which product will sell.
What the minimum is protecting
High minimums exist because setup costs are real. A print screen, a mould, a production changeover: all of it costs the same whether the run is a hundred or a hundred thousand. Suppliers set a floor that makes the setup worth doing.
Understanding that tells you where to push. Ordering more of one design is cheaper per unit than ordering the same total spread across four designs, because each design carries its own setup.
A launch that finds out rather than guesses
- Order 10 units of every format you are considering, including the ones you expect to reject. Holding them settles arguments that photographs cannot.
- Launch the range small and watch which product reorders. That is your hero, and it is often not the one you expected.
- Put the branding budget on the hero once you know what it is. Print on one bottle and label the rest until the volumes justify more.
- Scale the winner. Tiered pricing means the unit cost falls as that one product grows, so the economics improve exactly where the demand is.
What changes as you grow
Nothing about the packaging has to change, which is the point. The same bottle at 10 units and at 5,000 is the same bottle, so scaling does not force a relaunch or a new look. Only the price per unit moves.
The mistake that costs the most
Mixing suppliers for bottles and closures without confirming the neck finish. A 24/410 bottle takes a 24/410 closure and nothing else, and a mismatch makes both useless. Confirm the finish on every line of every order.
