Your First Order: What Ten Units Actually Gets You

By Be Different Packaging

Cosmetic packaging supplier, Strand, Western Cape. We quote and ship these containers from 10 units.

Most suppliers in this industry will not quote below a thousand units per item, and plenty will not answer an email below five thousand. A first order of ten exists so that the decision about which container to use can be made by holding them rather than by looking at photographs.

What ten units is enough for

  • Filling three or four with the actual formula and leaving them somewhere warm for a fortnight.
  • Shipping two to yourself, to find out what arrives after a courier has had them.
  • Photographing one properly, which is the asset every listing and post depends on.
  • Putting the remainder in front of somebody whose opinion you trust, in person.

Worked example

The same 30ml serum bottle, at each quantity we price in

Every unit price below is what the shop quotes for one of our 30ml serum bottles at that quantity. Nothing here is a projection. It is the ladder, so you can see exactly what waiting to order more is worth.

One hundred100 band100R 17.90R 1790.00
Two hundred and fifty250 band250R 17.12R 4280.00

Going from ten to two hundred and fifty saves R1.90 a bottle, about a tenth. That is worth having once you know the format sells, and it is a poor reason to commit R4,280 before you do. The saving on a hundred over ten is R112, which is less than one courier run of the wrong bottle back to you.

Order the option you expect to reject

The most useful ten units in a first order are usually the ones for the format you have already decided against. A jar next to a tottle ends an argument that can otherwise run for weeks, and being wrong at ten units costs almost nothing.

Do not print yet

Printing carries a setup cost per design, so it rewards volume on one design rather than variety across several. Order plain for the first run, find out which product reorders, and put the printing budget on that one.

The check that catches the expensive mistake

Confirm the neck finish on every line of the order. Bottles and closures are bought separately and a 24/410 bottle takes a 24/410 closure and nothing else. A mismatch makes both useless, and it is the single most common ordering error in this category.

Then scale the winner

Pricing is tiered, so the unit cost falls as the order grows. Nothing about the container changes between ten units and five thousand, which means scaling does not force a relaunch or a new look. Only the price per unit moves.
