Packaging Actives That Fall Apart: Retinol, Vitamin C and Air

Retinol, retinal and pure vitamin C are the actives customers pay the most for and the ones most easily ruined by the container. Both degrade with light and air, and both show it. A yellowing retinal or a browning ascorbic acid tells the customer something has gone wrong long before the formula stops working.
What is actually attacking the formula
- Light, including ordinary bathroom light. Clear glass offers no protection.
- Air, which arrives every time a dropper is opened and sits in the headspace afterwards.
- Fingers, if the format is a jar.
Airless is the answer when the budget reaches
An airless pump has a piston that rises as the product goes down, so no air ever occupies the space above the formula. It also empties almost completely, which customers notice at the end of an expensive bottle.
Amber glass is the answer when it does not
Amber glass is coloured through the body rather than sprayed, so it filters light for the life of the bottle. It costs a little more than clear and it is the cheapest real protection available.
What clear glass is for
Clear is right for anything stable: niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, most peptide blends, humectant serums. Using it there and amber on the unstable products makes the range look considered rather than uniform.
The mistake worth avoiding
Frosted glass is a finish, not a filter. It diffuses the view of the contents and blocks very little light. Brands reach for it thinking it protects, and it does not.
If a formula needs protection, use amber or an opaque airless bottle and treat frost as a decision about how the product looks.
